How to Fish Long Jigs

Long jigs work best when fished using the mechanical jigging method. The basic action involves dropping the rod tip while lifting the reel handle, then lifting the rod tip while dropping the handle. Done smoothly and consistently, this creates an erratic, darting motion that kingfish find hard to resist, while also conserving energy over a long session on the water.

The tackle of choice is a short, powerful jig rod coupled to an overhead reel with an extra-strong drag. Some anglers prefer very heavy spin reels as an alternative. The Salty Dancer is attached using a split ring, with the assist hook connected directly to the trace for a strong, reliable setup. Split ring pliers make changing jigs quick and easy.

While the lure can be retrieved at speed to draw strikes, mechanical jigging remains the preferred method. The key to consistent results is using a sounder to locate kingfish schools and keeping the lure close to the school throughout each drift.
